Much Ado About Updating
Oh boy. So here at SFAI, I volunteered my time and skills to help update a website. I then said to my colleagues, “hey, check out my websites so you can see how awesome I am at maintaining my web presence”. Unfortunately, it bit me in the butt when I realized that my last post was 2+ months ago. Woe is me.
Well how about an update? I’ve added some visuals to help you along my path of art and life. Below is the new setup of my studio:

Things definitely changed around since the previous post. My studio mate and I needed a change of scenery. The long table in the center is a great surface for both of us when we need to sew or lay out a lot of fabric.
Below, I’ve isolated five different things that I’d love to share as a way to bring you back on track. Oh my, so much to share! And yes, certain things are being Unsaid. Yes, you should fear/question my transparency because it, in fact, is never really so. But I do love you!

Numero Uno: my large sketchpad! This is my attempt to act more like a web start-up company with a dry erase board. But there’s something super wrong with ‘erasing’ ideas to me: I must archive everything. So I’ve started using a large newsprint sketchpad to jot down thoughts for myself as well as share ideas and problems with others in a big and bright fashion.

This certain page time warped to the present from October 15th. I’ve been expressing a lot of frustration with my personal presentation, both of my work and simply of my self. My uber cool adviser suggested that I just need to take a chill pill. And yes, other people have said the same thing. A lot of my frustrations bubble up during critiques, so the most important thing I need to do is try and relax and listen at these super dramatic moments. Anyhoo, the sketchpad is a place to write things when I’m in my studio. I hope to use it more for social situations, rather than super personal stuff because I do have a sketchbook and a Word document of thoughts. How I manage to keep things in line is a mystery.
#2! This is all the lumber that was part of my nutty installation that I completed back in September. It’s titled Hazing #1. Below is one of many images of the installation, which you can see in all its glory by clicking here (or on the image below):
#3! These little things that you can barely see in the photo of my studio are better seen in this image below:

These little guys are 3-D versions of the Coat of Arms of the Society of 23. There’s an entire story, of course, behind these little hanging ornaments, but I’m not going to share it just yet. They are made out of construction paper. There are six distinct parts and six distinct colors. If I play my cards right for the next year, I should be able to make 6*5*4*3*2 of them, without repeating any color combination, which multiplies to 720 unique objects. Stay tuned!
#4! The remnants of my second project this semester titled Holiday of Ascension. I created a sculpture, which you can see below. Click here or on the picture below to get the full whammy.
Finally, #5! This lump of fabric in a plastic bag is part of my third and current project titled Hazing #2. Because of the title, the project is clearly connected, somehow, to Hazing #1. This project can and will be approached without knowing what the hell #1 is about. When that fabric is cut, sewed, distressed, and put on each brother, you get the following photograph:

That is Jeffrey Augustine’s clown photograph. Each brother has his own, so if you navigate yourself to the Society of 23, click on brothers, and then select any brother, you will be able to select the thumbnail and see his clown photograph. I have to warn you that some photographs are NSFW. For example, one that is safe for work, other than the photograph above, is Adam Jacob’s photograph, which you can see by clicking on the thumbnail on this link. Each brother has a page like that, so again, you can access each photograph on the individual pages. I’m currently creating the installation, which itself will be titled Hazing #2, that accompanies these clown photographs. Once again, stay tuned!
Well that is the word of the good bird! Thanks for stopping by! How ’bout I make it my duty to keep you updated more often than once every two months, yeah? I think my Winter break will bring a flurry of writings, so the end of 2009 seems like it could go out with a bang. Laterz!
